With extensive, step-by-step photographs and instructions, this jiu-jitsu guide is an effective tool for mastering this ancient martial art. The original Japanese martial art developed by the elite samurai class during Japan's feudal era, Jiu-jitsu is the forerunner of Judo and the precursor of today's ultimate fighting styles, such as mixed martial arts (MMA). For centuries, this method of unarmed self-defense proved so successful in combat that it was kept secret and taught only to a select few. Based on the author's study with instructors at the Tokyo police academy, this martial arts book presents all the traditional techniques of Jujitsu, also known as Jiu-jitsu. These techniques teach you valuable restraining methods that force your opponent to submit without abuse by using pressure points. It shows you tips for search and seizure, and the almost extinct art of Hojojutsu—how to tie people up without using any knots. Japanese Jiu-jitsu: Secret Techniques of Self-Defense addresses and demonstrates the full range of Kaisho Goshin Budo Taiho Jitsu Ryu (Tokyo police self-defense). Learn specific techniques such as: The use of hands Throwing an opponent Attacking vital points with strikes and kicks The use of weapons (like the staff). This fascinating Jiujitsu book, designed as a training manual, also serves as a remarkable illustrated guide to the secret art of Japanese samurai self-defense.

Jiu Jitsu is an unarmed form of combat first used by the samurai warriors of ancient Japan. It's an all-round martial art that uses striking, blocking, grappling, locking, throwing, submission and weapons techniques. Jiu Jitsu is used by police and armed forces around the world and for street self defence. The emphasis is on technique over power and strength by using the opponent's force against themselves. This book is not intended to be a 'how to' manual for learning jiu jitsu, there are plenty of those books already available. Instead this book picks up on all those areas of jiu jitsu that can be learned and researched 'off the mat' and outside the dojo. Some chapters of this book will help those potential students unsure of whether jiu jitsu is for them to make a more informed decision. It will also be of great use to those looking to achieve higher grades in jiu jitsu, to expand their knowledge, educate themselves on the wider concepts and develop an interest in research that will lead them deeper into their own development and search for self improvement. This book is a 'brief' whirlwind tour of all the main topics surrounding this martial art.

The fierceness of the Japanese warrior and his fighting arts has fascinated Westerners since Europeans first came into contact with Japan more than 450 years ago. Classical Fighting Arts of Japan: A Complete Guide to Koryu Jujutsu is the first comprehensive English-language book on traditional jujutsu. Author Serge Mol-working almost exclusively from original Japanese source materials-vividly outlines the history of the close-quarter fighting methods that warriors developed not only to prove themselves on the battlefield and in daily life, but also to the constantly ready to defend their feudal lords. A great number of jujutsu styles and techniques-armed and unarmed-have existed over the centuries, and many of the classical weapon schools also instructed in the use of jujutsu. The Classical Fighting Arts of Japan expertly guides readers through the rise and development of many of the major schools. The classical martial arts as practiced in the ancient ryuha were deeply interwoven. For this reason, this definitive guide to koryu jujutsu will not only be invaluable to practioners of traditional and modern jujutsu, but will be of great interest to enthusiasts of modern budo such as judo, aikido, kendo, and iaido. Mol explores the historical and cultural factors that helped shape jujutsu and the martial arts in general. He offers a detailed look at individual jujutsu ryuha, giving details on the school's history (where possible including illustrations of their founders and photos of ancient manuscripts). This book is richly illustrated with numerous photographs of rare documents and with many photos of exponents demonstration techniques, many of which have never before been shown outside Japan. In addition to his extensive research in original source material, Mol had regular access in conversation, over the course of years, to the insights of the grandmasters of several of the most important jujutsu schools that remain active today. Classical Fighting Arts of Japan will be a welcome addition to the personal collection of every serious student of Japanese martial arts.

In 1882 Jigoro Kano (1860-1938) founded Kodokan Judo at Eishoji Temple in Tokyo. It was the culmination of a lifelong devotion to the jujutsu of the past, which he reorganized while taking great care to retain its classical traditions. Historically, martial arts were practiced only by the elite in Japan. Kano, a renowned educator as well as a sportsman, is credited with popularizing the martial arts, and in particular, judo, among people in all levels of society. When he was young, Kano studied jujutsu, a martial art practiced in Japan since feudal times, which involved throwing, hitting, kicking, stabbing, slashing, choking, bending and twisting limbs-and defenses against these attacks. After years of studying, he realized that although many different jujutsu techniques were taught, there was no one core value holding them together. Kano identified an all-pervasive principle- to make the most efficient use of mental and physical energy-and combined only those techniques in which this principle was correctly applied into modern judo. 'Ju' means gentleness or giving way. 'Do' means principle or the way. Judo, therefore is the Way of Gentleness, which implies that first giving way leads to ultimate victory. The Kodokan is literally, 'the school for studying the Way.' This book is a collection of Kano's essential teachings, selected and compiled from his wealth of writings and lectures spanning a period of fifty-one years. Today the International Judo Federation has 187 member countries and regions. As an official sport of the Olympic Games, judo has inspired young people of all nationalities, and Kodokan is universally recognized as the Mecca of Judo.

Jujutsu in Japan to Brazilian Jiu jitsu in America Book Review:
Japanese Jujutsu and Judo are the predecessors of modern-day Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has swept the martial arts world by storm, proving itself as one of the most effective fighting systems on the planet. This book takes a look at training in traditional Jujutsu in Japan under Japanese martial arts expert Yasushi Kiyomoto. It compares these experiences with training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under National Champion and 2nd degree black belt, Brad Court in America. This book isn't about techniques, but rather what these training experiences are like and how these two martial arts relate and differ from one another. 'Among the students of jujutsu and kindred arts themselves, it frequently happens that bones are broken or dislocated, sinews wrenched, and obstinate adversaries choked into insensibility.' -E.J. Harrison (1873- 1961) The Fighting Spirit of Japan

Japan s Complete Fighting System Shin Kage Ryu Book Review:
Master the extremely effective but relatively unknown Shin Kage Ryu jiu jitsu with this illustrated martial arts book. Shin Kage Ryu jiu jitsu has existed as a fighting system for over two hundred years, and the literal meaning of the three characters is 'spirit shadow way.' Originating in Japan and influenced by Okinawan fighting systems, the art has evolved into one that incorporates karate-like kicks, punches, and strikes, as well as the throwing, grappling, and joint techniques of judo. Thus, Shin Kage Ryu is a complete fighting system, one that combines the best elements of karate with those of jujutsu. The unique mix of disciplines in Shin Kage Ryu makes it possible to fight with an opponent in an upright position and, if necessary, take him to the ground and score a victory by grappling or choking. Students are also taught extensive attack and defense techniques with both the sword and knife.

The martial arts are various methods of armed and unarmed combat, originally used in warfare in the Far East and shaped by Oriental philosophical concepts. The history of martial arts is challenging to document precisely, because of the lack of historical records, secretive nature of the teacher-student relationships and political circumstances during much of its history. The martial arts are popular in many parts of the world today as forms of self-defense, law enforcement tactics, competitive sports, and exercises for physical fitness. Among them are KARATE , Kung fu, jujitsu, JUDO, aikido, Tai chi chuan, Sumo wrestling, and kendo. This informative book takes it's reader on a journey throughout time and across the globe for a close up look at the history of many martial arts styles .

First published in 1904 as Jiu-Jitsu Combat Tricks: Japanese Feats of Attack & Defense in Personal Encounter, this unique volume is an invaluable addition to any athlete's library. Jiu-Jitsu (or Jujutsu as it is known as today) is a classic martial art developed primarily in Japan. Its roots can be traced back to the early seventeenth century, though it was only introduced to the United States in the late 1800s. In this one-of-a-kind manual, H. Irving Hancock distills the essence of Jiu-Jitsu combat into easy-to-understand, elegant instructions. Accompanied by thirty-two period photographs, this book is both an instructional guide and a historic window into early twentieth-century athleticism. Readers will learn the essential skills of Jiu-Jitsu, including: basic throat hold, tripping an opponent, defensive reversal from kneeling position, boxing defense, hook throws, and much more. At its most basic, Jiu-Jitsu is the art of defensive grappling-a close combat technique that instills discipline, flexibility, and efficiency of moment. This book is perfect for anyone looking to understand the classical essence of the art. This Kindle edition was scanned from the original and translated to kindle via OCR.

'A knowledge of the Japanese art reduces boxing from a science of defense to the status of an excellent exercise. The well-trained jiu-jitsian is able to meet and to defeat the fistic expert at all points. In this volume much attention has been paid to the methods by which the Japanese overcomes the exponent of ring work. The greatest charm of all about jiu-jitsu is that it does not call for the employment of great strength. The weaker man, if skilled, is able to vanquish his stronger but unversed opponent. The art has a history of more than twenty-five centuries, and, during its long course of evolution, jiu-jitsu has been perfected as the art of the smaller, weaker man.'

The best guide to learning jiu-jitsu ever written in English, this is the most comprehensive study available. It describes the authentic form of judo developed in the late 19th century by Professor Jiguro Kano — not the many imitations often called by this name. Officially recognized by the Japanese government as the preeminent school of jiu-jitsu, the Kano system was the method in which Japanese armed forces and police were trained. The complete system of 160 holds and throws is clearly explained, with 487 photographs and four charts providing further clarification. Pressure points, balance, falling, and every other important aspect receives full and complete treatment. The first section presents 60 'tricks' of combat in strict sequence that prepare for part two, in which readers learn how to apply the advantages of the tricks they've learned. The third section deals with highly scientific tricks of combat, by which an opponent may be incapacitated — and the methods of kuatsu, or resuscitation, by which a fallen opponent may be revived. Martial arts students at every level of experience will find this classic guide a source of valuable information and instruction.

Zen and the Art of Jiu Jitsu - The 30 Day Program to Improve Your Jiu Jitsu Game 1000% Are you Stuck? Struggle. That's the word that comes to mind when I think about the transition from blue belt to purple belt. For reasons that I can't quite work out, when I came to the later stages of being a blue belt I felt confused and lost in my game. Trying to put all the pieces together seemed like a task too far and quitting looked like an option, after all, most guys my age are hitting the golf course or surfing not rolling on the floor with sweat soaked people. This quitting idea seemed an option at least. In an effort to review what I was doing and pushing through this plateau I developed a few habits that not only brought about a huge change in my game but by applying them on a consistent basis turned me into a respected player in my academy. From obscurity to recognition, even from Black belts, and it only took me one month! This is a great manual for anyone interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, MMA and Grappling.

The author of this concise guide to unarmed combat and self-defence is a legend. W. E. Fairbairn (1885-1960) spent over thirty years in the tough environment of the Riot Squads of China's Shanghai Municipal Police. In order to lower levels of Police mortality at the hands of Chinese Tongs, he studied ancient Chinese and Japanese martial arts, including Ju-jitsu, and was the first foreigner to be awarded a black belt in the discipline. He developed his own system which he called 'Defendu'. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was recruited by Britain's Special Operations Executive as an Instructor in unarmed combat and expounded the deadly mysteries of attack and defence to scores of trainee agents about to be dropped into occupied Europe. His methods were approved and officially adopted throughout the British army. Fairbairn also developed weapons and defence aids such as bullet proof vests. He is best known as the co-inventor of the famous Sykes-Fairbairn knife. In this book he expounds his distilled experience of unarmed combat. Fully illustrated, it shows how to deliver deadly blows with hand, fist, knee and boot; wrist, bear- and strangle holds (and how to break them); how to throw an enemy, and how to break their backs; how to disarm a pistol-wielding attacker; and securing a prisoner. The book also contains a chapter on the use of the rifle in close combat by Captain P. N. Walbridge.

Fight Sports and American Masculinity Book Review:
Throughout America's past, some men have feared the descent of their gender into effeminacy, and turned their eyes to the ring in hopes of salvation. This work explains how the dominant fight sports in the United States have changed over time in response to broad shifts in American culture and ideals of manhood, and presents a narrative of American history as seen from the bars, gyms, stadiums and living rooms of the heartland. Ordinary Americans were the agents who supported and participated in fight sports and determined its vision of masculinity. This work counters the economic determinism prevalent in studies of American fight sports, which overemphasize profit as the driving force in the popularization of these sports. The author also disputes previous scholarship's domestic focus, with an appreciation of how American fight sports are connected to the rest of the world.
